Governor Brownback signs water related bills

On Mar. 5, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback signed the first two water-related bills of the 2012 session during a ceremony in Garden City and challenged Kansans to embrace the new laws.  The signed bills include House Bill 2451, providing incentive to conserve water by eliminating "use it or lose it" in areas closed to new appropriation, and Senate Bill 272, amending multi-year flex accounts to expand irrigators’ capabilities and options so they can manage their crop water without increasing long-term water use.  The new laws are designed to conserve the state’s water supply and extend the life of the Ogallala Aquifer. Meter Repair? Replace? Report!

Water right owners who repair or replace their water flowmeters are required to report these actions to DWR in a timely manner.  This helps improve water use data the state relies on for various purposes.  A new form with detailed instructions and contact information is available for download to help water right holders remain in compliance.  [more]

Dam safety inspection report requirements and guidelines

K.S.A. 82a-303b requires owners of Class C, high hazard, and Class B, significant hazard, dam owners to retain a licensed professional engineer to conduct safety inspections every three years and five years, respectively. These inspection reports must be submitted to DWR within 60 days of the inspection date.  For standard formatting purposes, to expedite the DWR review process and provide a checklist for engineers to meet K.A.R 5-40-90 requirements, DWR staff developed the Dam Safety Inspection Report Requirements and Guidelines.  [more]
