Small Meat Processors

The Kansas Department of Agriculture's Meat and Poultry Inspection program ensures the safety and wholesomeness of meat and poultry items produced by Kansas slaughter and processing plants that are not under federal inspection.  Its mission is to detect, and eliminate from commerce, meat and poultry items that pose a health threat, are improperly labeled, or serve as a source of economic fraud to the consumer.  Plant owners under state inspection face the same sanitation and facility standards as their USDA-inspected competitors.

State-inspected plants allow livestock owners to market their products locally, which increases their profit share.  Grocery stores in some of our smaller towns purchase their meat and poultry products from state-inspected plants.  And, in some areas, small meat processing facilities have found new markets in consumers who want to purchase organic products, or regional or ethnic specialty products.

Below are links to both state-inspected meat and poultry processors and custom slaughter operations.  State-inspected processors offer products for sale to consumers.  Custom slaughter operations do not sell meat and poultry to the public, but they provide slaughter and processing services to livestock owners.
