Kansas-Oklahoma Arkansas River Compact Annual Meeting

TOPEKA - The Kansas-Oklahoma Arkansas River Commission will conduct its annual meeting at 9 a.m. on July 27th, 2011 at the Oklahoma Water Resources Board located at 3800 N. Classen Blvd in Oklahoma City .

This public meeting focuses on water related activities within the Arkansas River and its major tributaries in Kansas and Oklahoma. This is the group’s 47th annual meeting.

The Kansas-Oklahoma Compact was entered into in 1965 to promote interstate cooperation, equitably divide and promote the orderly development of the waters of the Arkansas River Basin, provide an agency for administering the waters of the Arkansas River Basin, and to encourage an active pollution abatement program in each state.

This is a separate compact from the Kansas-Colorado Arkansas River Compact established in 1949.

The Kansas-Oklahoma compact commission is comprised of seven members: three commissioners representing Kansas, three commissioners representing Oklahoma, and one commissioner representing the United States.  The commission monitors the streamflow and water quality at several locations within the Arkansas River Basin, and tabulates the new conservation storage that has been constructed in the various subbasins of the Arkansas River.

Additional information about the Kansas-Oklahoma Arkansas River Compact, including the agenda for the July 27 meeting, can be found under “Intrastate water issues” on the Kansas Division of Water Resources website at www.ksda.gov/interstate_water_issues/content/356 or by contacting: Bob Lytle at (785) 296-6086 or Bob.Lytle@kda.ks.gov.
