Africanized Honey Bee
Honey bees are the chief insect pollinator for more than 90 crops in the United States. They are vitally important to the farm economy of the nation and are also valued for the products they produce. Honey bees, whether they are European, African, or Africanized only sting defensively. Africanized honey bees are a concern to anyone who may visit an area they inhabit because they are extremely protective of their hive and tend to be much more aggressive than European honey bees.
Africanized honey bees have been migrating north in the United States for several years. Recent reports from Oklahoma confirm they are near our southern border and may soon move into Kansas. The Kansas Department of Agriculture is working with Kansas State University Extension Service and other public agencies to inform the public about living with Africanized honeybees. You can help us by sharing this information with others in your area. Please view the two linked documents. The first document is a fact sheet with general information about the bee. The second document is an emergency planning guide for first responders to use to prepare to deal with Africanized bees should they arrive in a Kansas community.
