Rains over much of the state has improved stands considerably. Western Kansas is still lacking moisture but parts of west central and northwest have made much progress in moisture needs for the spring wheat crop. With moisture, we are seeing the development of leaf diseases. These diseases are primarily reported as speckled leaf blotch and powdery mildew (Appel and E De-Wolf, KSU). The two diseases have new lesions/infections on lower leaves in a widespread area of central Kansas. Trace amounts of leaf rust are also reported. Wheat viral diseases are present in the crop. Barley yellow dwarf symptoms of flagged leaves and stunted plants were observed in early April in southeast Kansas (Appel, Copeland). In a recent tour of southwest and west central Kansas, wheat streak mosaic levels were very low and gener-ally a trace when present. Wheat viruses were sampled in Ford, Meade, Clark, Gray, Lane, Elllsworth, and Ellis counties (Appel).

The last month has been busy for staff with greenhouse and retail lot inspections. A few un common diseases have been found along with the more com-mon diseases of gray mold and damping off issues. For the most part, plant material ap-pears relatively healthy and I attribute this to the mild winter and very favorable growing con-ditions. Of course, the growers deserve a lot of the credit. Over the past few weeks most major greenhouse operations have been inspected for compliance with the plant pest freedom standards of Kansas. Plant disease pressure has been slow to build in the state�s wheat crop. Normally, we talk about the rust diseases and their imminent buildup at this time of the year. Because of dry droughty conditions prevalent in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, the rust diseases have been slow or absent in progression. Over the last couple of weeks, we have seen a shift in some of the disease pressure in Kansas. Leaf rust appears to be making a late run on wheat fields with moderate to high levels in south central and southeast Kansas. Look for levels to increase over the next 10-14 days in central and northern counties.
