Kansas Dam Safety Conference
Join us at the 2013 Dam Safety Conference Wednesday, Feb. 13, in Overland Park to learn more about the security and safety of dams and other water structures in Kansas.
Held for those interested in learning more about regulations, technical topics, and issues affecting water structures in the state, the conference will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the Kansas University Edwards Campus in the new BEST Conference Center and Regnier Hall Auditorium, 12604 Quivira Road, Overland Park, Kan.
Scheduled speakers include university researchers; licensed engineers; and federal, state, and local agency officials who will be presenting information on the following topics: Economics of Reservoir Sedimentation, Dam Investment and Green Power: Bowersock Rubber Dam Installation, South Lawrence Trafficway Embankment Fill and Wetland Stabilization, The Evolvement of Dam Theory and Practice, Risk-Informed Decisions: Corps of Engineers Dam Safety Program, Fracking and Dam Risk, Levee Inspections and Response to Missouri River Flood of 2011, Linked Dynamic Modeling for Flood Risk Analysis, Controlling Foundation Leakage in Dams, Erosion Control and Geosynthetics, Drought Effects on Ponds and Lakes, How Disaster Shapes Policy and Engineering in the Kansas River Basin, and more.
This year’s keynote speaker will be David Rogers, Ph.D., P.E, Department of Geological Sciences & Engineering at the Missouri University of Science & Technology. A geologic hazard and St. Francis dam scholar, Rogers has been the primary consultant and technical narrator for Discovery channel programs on dam disasters and will be examining Kansas geology, hydrology, and water resources history in his presentation.
An early registration fee of $45 per person is due by Feb. 1. Use this registration form that includes the conference schedule. After Feb. 1, the fee will be $55. Credit card payment is available by mailing to KDA this form. Certificates documenting professional development hours and continuing credit hours will be available to attendees.

Beginning in 2003, the Water Structures Program at the Division of Water Resources has hosted an annual conference to increase stakeholder knowledge of dam safety and state regulations. Research, case studies, state regulations, environmental impacts, emergency response, yearly legislative updates, DWR program news, and other presentations continue stakeholders’ knowledge about dams.
