Basin Management Team

The Basin Management Team is funded by the Kansas State Water Plan and implemented by the Kansas Department of Agriculture's Division of Water Resources.  It is designed to take a proactive approach to water resource issues in subbasins identified in the Kansas State Water Plan.  Project teams of environmental scientists work to find solutions to groundwater decline and streamflow depletion in identified subbasins.  The program is intended to be holistic in nature so that all water issues are addressed.  As a result, long-term management strategies are developed in a cooperation with federal, state and local agencies, as well as private interest groups and the public.

Mission Statement

To analyze aquifers and stream systems in targeted areas and work with stakeholders to develop and assess strategies to protect water rights and improve hydrologic sustainability.

Five-Phase Process

The Basin Management Team process includes participation from local representatives, state, federal and local entities, and other interested groups. The program uses a five-phase process that includes:

  • Initiating the project
  • Analyzing and educating
  • Evaluating alternatives
  • Making recommendations
  • Implementation

We encourage you to learn more about the five-phase process.  We also appreciate your comments to help us improve how it works.
