About Us

As early as 1986, the State of Kansas recognized the need for the development of a long-term management solutions in addressing areas affected by drought and over appropriation of water resources. Decisions have historically been reactive in nature. Future needs may be better served by taking a holistic, proactive approach in developing long-term management strategies based on evaluations of the hydrogeology of the subbasin.

In 1993, the Kansas Legislature authorized the formation of the Subbasin Water Resource Management Program. The Kansas Department of Agriculture-Division of Water Resources is charged by statute to administer and allocate the State's water resources and was identified as one agency to address these water issues under current statutory authority. In 2009, the program changed its name to the Basin Management Team.
